From a small engineering business set up in the 1840s, Siemens grew to become one of the largest and most successful electrical engineering companies in the world. They were responsible for laying the first cable from Britain to America, installing the first ever street lighting in Godalming and they provided the first ever public electric railway.

A UK based company the business developed steadily to annual sales of more than €75 billion in year 2003-2004, more than 1 million shareholders worldwide and representatives in more than 190 countries.


Today Siemens is behind nearly all of the technology and services we take for granted in our daily lives. Siemens' UK business sectors include information & communications, transportation, financial services, lighting, medical, research & development, power, and automation & control.

In one year in the UK they sell ~160,000 domestic appliances, scan 15,000 women for breast cancer, read electricity meters in 9 million homes and process 6 million passports.
