This is fairly simple but I’ve given it quite a few niceties if you have the time. At first glance it simply has three sides and four slats

End Cheeks

These I made from solid wood composite left over from another job. If you look at the photo carefully, for aesthetics, it has quite a complex outline eg the back panel is 50mm up from the floor and it has feet - these facilitate occasional vacuum cleaning to remove clods of dust that always seem to inhabit such collection places.

The back panel is rebated into the rear of the cheeks, with a router, so that one does not see the fibrous edges of the plywood backboard.

Other than what actually sits on the floor all edges were finished with an Roman ogée routing bit.

Backboard

Using plywood gives significant rigidity to the whole unit. In order to give maximum shoe space it’s only 3mm thick and meets the top exactly.

Shoe Support Slats

These are made of the simplest, cheapest 45mm skirting-board. However so that no screws show each end is supported by two dowels, that’s 16 in total, with a gentle camber so that shoes sit naturally on two levels. I decided to give considerable clearance between the bottom ones and the floor so that heavy leather trekking boots can be stored at floor level. This gives three levels for shoe storage. The length of the whole was constrained because a vacuum cleaner is also stored here at the right-hand end and the height just misses the coats stored above.

Finish

The whole unit was sanded with medium, then fine sandpaper and finished with two coats of good quality gloss varnish - sanding with fine glass paper after the first coat had gone fully hard (48hours) means the top coat is extremely smooth.
