VIRGINIA WATER

This sweet shangri-la offers such great space that there is room for serious adults to admire the natural beauty and lots places for children to safely tumble around oblivious natural lakeside wonders. Ball games are not encouraged but I saw people playing simply with their young ones. The map below shows the walking routes.

Savill Garden

A separate area of spectacular planting this much lauded parade of all things Ericaceae is open 9am - 6pm 1st March to 31st October. As it’s utterly beautiful and takes a lot of maintenance so there is a significant charge for entry. I believe that it’s best to book beforehand. No eating there is allowed.

Car Parking

There are five car parks, three for general use, with Valley Gardens & Wick Road for members only (see below). Do be aware that on a sunny weekend you may find all of them full by 11am so get there well before that ! They offer another car park at Swinley Forest but this is in Bracknell a long way away. Significant parking charges apply. When arriving please note when your car parks closes as this varies throughout the year and can catch some out (I have no idea what they do if you don’t leave before closing). Obviously you’ll be thinking of parking somewhere nearby to avoid the parking charge ? Good luck - I drove round and found nowhere !

Cycling

At times there can be a lot of walkers therefore cycles have to kept to certain lanes. However people just walk all over the place with no discipline so cycle patiently.  See:  My Suggested Cycle Route

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

They encourage use of public transport. For a list of train stations and buses see:  How To Find Us

WINDSOR & WINDSOR GREAT PARK

Further to the north is Windsor Great Park covering 5000 acres (2020 hectares). It’s open dawn to dusk and free to enter but there’s a charge for parking. In the summer the vast areas of dry grass seem to induce thirst so I suggest that you take adequate drinks with you. Picnicing is allowed but barbecues and gazebos are banned. Please respect others, and maintenance teams, by taking your litter away with you - if you don’t there are Royal Park Wardens who will impose a significant fine !
