A relatively unknown* jewel in West London's crown this little chalk river meanders from West to East for 15miles through some of the most quintessentially picturesque countryside in England. Below I have produced a map of some of the highlights but really the whole route is a delight itself. The whole route is very child-friendly. If taking a child’s push-chair in the summer the ground of field at the start will be hard and the condition and size of the paths improves as one continues. Please respect the farms and cress beds along the way and keep dogs under control.

Walk Or Cycle

You may take your bikes on trains (but see TfL Rules).  The trains to Chalfont & Latimer Station are regular but not frequent so plan accordingly. You will need to cross under the line by the nearby bridge (turn left out of the station car park). The route is an easy 10km downhill but if you are cycling don’t rush it because there’s lots to see. There are a couple of fields to cross at the start which will be soft in winter, but I encountered no mud, and a gate or so where you may need to lift your bike over.  Stop, relax and take in the beauty of the summer flowers, cress beds, beautiful cottages and villages. You may want to bring your paints !

Photos of the cycle ride, including the following map (675k) in higher resolution, are here:  River Chess Valley Map* & Photos  (You do NOT need to download Dropbox App)

* Warning Of Confusion Note that my route is with the flow of water ie down hill. On the official leaflet, ChessValley01, they have taken the peculiar decision to have the river flow from bottom to top !
