Why They Travelled

They married in Plymouth on 17th March 1909 and moved to St Columb Minor which is near Newquay.  Their first child, Eric, was born exactly 14 days later.  There were a lot of opportunities offered in The New World and Eric, who was 9 months old, was deemed fit for the voyage which would 6-7 weeks.

RMS Orontes

The liner was built for the Orient Steam Navigation Company by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company of Glasgow and launched on 10th May 1902 sailing on her maiden voyage on 24 October 1902. She concentrated on the UK - Australia route most of her working life. Her large refrigerated hold would later be used for bringing meat and dairy products back to Britain during WW1.

  3. Beam:   18 m

  4. Speed: 18.8 knots

  5. Passengers: First class: 200,   Second class: 200,  Third Class: 600.

How & When They Travelled

Frank had experience as an Engineer in South Africa. On 8th April 1910 Frank joined the Queensland Government Railways at £100pa salary as Assistant to the Resident Engineer on the railway construction works Kannungur/Blackbutt/Yarraman line. Their first house was in Gatton, West of Brisbane near Toowoomba in outback Queensland. It must’ve been exceedingly hot.

On 8th January 1910, at Plymouth, they embarked the RMS Orontes enroute from London, via Suez to Sydney.
